Homemade Honey Oat Wheat Bread 🍞

This recipe is relatively easy to make, it does require yeast and a bit of time waiting around for the dough to rise. This bread is very filling, dense, and thick. I love this for a PB & J! This recipe makes 1 - 9x5 loaf pan, and I personally cut 10 slices of bread, and cut 1 slice in half to make a sandwich! This recipe does not have to be exact, you could use half-white, half- wheat flour, or add other things on top. It's all about experimenting and finding something you like!

Servings: 10 slices

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 c honey

  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast

  • 1/4 c warm water

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil

  • 1/2 c quick oats

  • 3.5 c whole wheat flour

  • 1 1/4 c warm water

  • Egg white

  • sunflower seeds and oatmeal (for topping)

Directions:

  1. Combine honey, yeast, and 1/4 c warm water in a bowl. Give it a few stirs and let it sit for 5 minutes.

  2. Add salt, olive oil, quick oats, 1 1/4 c warm water. Slowly add the flour and use a dough hook and mix on low. Once a dough forms, you may need to knead it a few times by hand on a floured countertop.

  3. Grease a bowl with olive oil and place the large doughball inside. Cover with a kitchen towel and place in the oven with the light on to rise for 1 hour.

  4. After the hour is up, get a 9x5 bread loaf pan and grease it with a little oil. Push the doughball down with your hands and take it out of the bowl. Place it on the countertop and form it into a loaf shape with your hands. Put it in the loaf pan and cover with a towel to let it rise another hour. I usually keep it right on top of the stove.

  5. Preheat the oven to 350 F. The warmth from the oven heating up will help the bread to rise as it sits on top.

  6. Bake for 25 minutes.

  7. Get a small bowl and the white from 1 egg. Get a pastry brush and sunflower seeds and additional oats to add on top.

  8. Take the bread out when 25 minutes is up and brush with egg white and add toppings. Bake for 5 more minutes.

  9. Let the bread cool a few minutes before taking it out of the pan. It will be hot for quite a while. Let it cool before cutting. Enjoy!
